This hollow-wood surfboard sports six just hatched baby sea turtles (representing my six grandchildren).
The majority of the wood on this piece is paulownia. The baby sea turtle bodies are made from koa, their little flippers from green teak, and the dark pin lines are made from walnut.
Using “strip-build” technique, each piece was placed over a custom wood frame – one piece at a time.
This piece was definitely a labor of love for me on a personal level, but everybody loves baby sea turtles. Go, honu, go!
Run For It earned the 1st Place Award in the Sculpture Category at the 2017 La Jolla Art and Wine Festival.
