This Apia inspired hollow wood surfboard is strip-built over a wood frame. This piece sports over two hundred individual and very thin strips of wood from a variety of species including cedar, pine, mahogany, redwood, poplar, teak, and walnut (most of which was reclaimed). The tail is inlaid with turquoise stone. No paint or stain. The colors come naturally from the wood and stone.

I handcrafted this board as a tribute to Ben Aipa and his ‘ohana. It’s my way of saying, “Thanks for The Sting!”

This piece was acquired by the Aipa’s during the 2014 International Boardroom Show in Del Mar, CA where it was awarded Best of Show.

It was later presented to Ben Aipa during the “50 Years of Shaping” anniversary celebration at the Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center in San Clemente, CA where it remained on display for several months before being shipped to Ben Aipa’s surf shop, Ala Moana, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

This Sting surfboard measures 7’ 9″ x 21-¼” x 3″
